Remote Access Inspection of a Penstock Pipeline

Client

Location

Squamish, BC, Canada

Sector

Potable Water Industry

Date

May 2024 – Ongoing (Annually)

Hybrid Access was engaged to conduct an annual asset condition review of a 4 km section of penstock pipeline located in a rugged and isolated area of Squamish, British Columbia. The site’s terrain and limited infrastructure made the project particularly demanding, requiring careful planning and specialized remote access strategies to reach the inspection zones safely.

The team travelled deep into the mountainous environment to carry out the inspection program and collect detailed information about the condition of the pipeline. Working in such an isolated setting meant that every phase of the project had to account for safety, logistics, and the availability of emergency response measures, including confined space rescue standby coverage.

Confined Space Rescue Standby for Critical Safety

Because portions of the penstock system required entry into restricted areas, Hybrid Access also provided full confined space rescue standby throughout the duration of the inspection work. This ensured that any personnel entering the pipeline or associated infrastructure were supported by a trained rescue team capable of responding immediately if an emergency occurred.

Operating in a remote access environment significantly increases the importance of preparedness. With limited nearby resources, the rescue team maintained dedicated equipment and procedures on site at all times. This included continuous monitoring of conditions and maintaining readiness to perform a confined space rescue standby operation if required.

Remote Access Logistics and Emergency Preparedness

Given the remoteness of the project location, Hybrid Access deployed a specialized medical transport carrier to support potential emergency evacuations. This equipment ensured that injured personnel could be safely moved across difficult terrain if a situation required rapid medical response during the inspection.

By combining technical inspection expertise with advanced remote access capabilities and professional confined space rescue standby, Hybrid Access provided a comprehensive solution for the client. The project demonstrates how complex infrastructure inspections in isolated environments require not only technical knowledge, but also detailed planning and safety systems to protect everyone working on site.

About Remote Access Installation

Remote access installation refers to the installation of equipment or structural components in locations that are difficult to reach using conventional ground-based access methods. These environments may include high structures, confined spaces, rooftops, towers, or complex architectural surfaces where standard lifts or scaffolding are impractical.

Specialized technicians use advanced access techniques and carefully planned anchor systems to reach these areas safely. This allows installations such as lighting systems, safety equipment, sensors, communication devices, or architectural features to be completed without major structural disruption.

Remote access installation also allows technicians to work with precision in environments where space is limited. By using lightweight equipment and controlled movement systems, installations can be performed efficiently while maintaining strict safety and operational standards.

Why Rope Access?

Many projects involving remote access installation take place on structures with complex geometry or limited ground access. Traditional equipment such as cranes or scaffolding may require extensive setup or may not fit within the available working area.

Rope access provides a highly adaptable solution. Technicians can safely move across vertical or irregular surfaces while carrying installation tools and materials. This flexibility allows work to be performed quickly and with minimal disruption to the surrounding environment.

For projects that require specialized access and precise installation at height, Hybrid Access Inc. delivers reliable rope access solutions. Their trained technicians combine technical expertise with rigorous safety standards to complete remote access installation projects efficiently and safely.
