Hybrid Access is proud to have completed one of its most memorable projects: the full lighting installation replacement on the iconic geodesic dome at Science World in Vancouver. Originally built for Expo ’86, the landmark dome is recognized worldwide for its distinctive architecture and presence along the city’s waterfront skyline.
Over time, the original system of 198 LED lights began to fail, leaving the structure dark by the summer of 2022. Restoring the visual impact of the dome required a highly specialized lighting installation project combined with advanced rope access techniques, allowing technicians to safely reach every part of the structure without disrupting the surrounding urban environment.
Rope Access Techniques for Complex Structural Work
The scope of work extended far beyond simply replacing lights. The Hybrid Access team first carried out the full demolition and removal of the aging lighting system before preparing the structure for its upgrade. Using rope access, technicians carefully navigated the complex geometry of the geodesic dome while maintaining precise control and safety at height.
Additional work included cleaning and repainting the entire steel exoskeleton, completing structural steel repairs, and preparing the dome to support a completely modernized lighting installation system. The flexibility of rope access made it possible to reach every section of the dome efficiently, even across its intricate triangular framework.
Advanced Lighting Installation and Flawless System Performance
The new system dramatically transformed the dome’s appearance. A total of 651 LED lights were installed, more than three times the original number. The upgraded lighting installation features both outward-facing and inward-facing lights that reflect off the steel structure, creating a much more dynamic and visually striking display across the entire dome.
Once the lighting installation was completed, the entire system underwent comprehensive testing. All 651 lights were activated, and the system returned zero failures. Every light worked perfectly on the first test, a result that reflects the expertise, precision, and professionalism of the Hybrid Access team.

Why Rope Access?
The geodesic design of the Science World Dome creates significant access challenges. Its complex triangular steel framework and large curved surface make traditional access solutions such as scaffolding or lifts extremely difficult to deploy in a busy urban setting.
Rope access provided the ideal solution for this project. Technicians were able to move efficiently across the entire dome structure, safely reaching every lighting location while minimizing disruption to the surrounding waterfront area.
